It’s winter. I have a heat pump. I’m staring at the remote.

It has many options, but the only one I’m interested in is “make the room warmer”.

I press the temperature button. The number goes up. Nothing happens.

I step outside and inspect the condenser unit. Is it broken? Strange, because it worked yesterday. I switch it off and on at the wall.

The unit carries on doing nothing.

I frown at the remote. On/off. An icon of a clock. Another icon that looks like a tree. I press a button marked “TM Off”.

The remote flashes the word “ON”.

Still nothing.

Every button produced a response except the one I wanted.

The instruction manual isn't helping.

“Press this button to turn on or turn off the health and scavenging functions in operation status.”

Scavenging?

Google offered no solution.

ChatGPT suggested I call a service technician.

Hmmm. Like a kid with a stubborn toy, I pulled out the batteries.

The screen went blank.

Reinserted.

Waited.

Hit “ON”.

The heat pump springs into life.

Finally.

I’m afraid to touch any more buttons.

Especially the scavenging one.

Still, I am curious...
